Sony bolsters its ground-breaking, interoperable IP Live Production System with a range of new solutions

Delivering a format agnostic, robust and ready IP Live workflow to the broadcast industry

SYDNEY, 18 April 2016 – At NAB 2016, Sony has unveiled its latest solutions to further enhance its fully interoperable IP Live Production System with Networked Media Interface (NMI). The new suite of solutions have been developed to help broadcasters make the most of IP technology, allowing them to deliver on the increasing demand for 4K live content while addressing the cost and scalability issues associated with conventional SDI live production workflows.

The expanded offering now includes:

• HDC-4800: The world’s first integrated 4K 8x / HD 16x Ultra Super Motion Camera system.
• BPU-4800: Base-band processor unit (BPU) with replay server capability that records up to four hours of 4K ultra-high speed content allowing much simpler & faster operations for replays.
• BPU-4500: BPU which enables the routing of 4K signals that support long distance transmission either over an IP Network or through standard SMPTE or single mode fiber cables.
• HDCU-4300: Combined camera control unit (CCU) / BPU for the HDC-4300 which optimises the space needed for an outside broadcasting (OB) environment.
• PWS-4500: Multiport A/V server that handles 4x 4K / 8x HD signals using XAVC 10bit codec for high quality recording & playback including High Dynamic Range (HDR).
• XVS-8000, XVS-7000 and XVS-6000: Multi-format switchers that accept hybrid SDI & IP I/O’s with powerful 4K & HDR operations, inheriting the operational features of MVS series.

When combined, these offerings provide a complete solution for 4K production and High Frame Rate (HFR) recording/playback, available over SDI or IP for maximum flexibility when choosing the best suitable infrastructure.

Together with an integrated server, the BPU-4800, a replay operator, can handle long recording and instant replay, with no additional HFR data transfer required. Connected with a dedicated IP network, the BPU-4800 and PWS-4500 servers1 offer “Share Play” function, enabling any replay operator to access content from as well as send content to multiple servers, creating stunning highlight edits.

Sony pioneers the development and adoption of IP Live in the broadcast industry

Sony recognizes the transformative benefits of IP for Live Production and has been working with its customers, standardization committees, partners and competitors for the past five years to ensure that interoperability is at the core of its approach. This involves developing and testing solutions that support a complete spectrum of standards and ready for the operating pressures of today’s live environments.

At NAB 2016, Sony will demonstrate its continuous commitment to deliver IP interoperability among a wide range of compatible live production products through its IP Live Alliance. The alliance, with the recent participation by Grass Valley, has grown to 49 vendors across the live production space. Sony has also participated in the AIMS initiative to promote the adoption of widely supported, open standards to foster IP-based interoperability and further industry mitigation to IP-based platforms.

Apart from being a member of SMPTE and VSF, Sony also actively leads industry conversations around interoperability and standardization. To date many industry conversations focus on Media Transport such as SMPTE 2022-6, a protocol for Audio and Video mapping. While this is definitely crucial for live production, it is only one part of the picture. The other ‘planes’ of interoperability - timing, identity, discovery & registration, flow control, flow switching and compression - are just as important. Sony’s NMI acts as a standard framework across many aspects of the live production workflow, ensuring SMPTE 2022-6 is the beginning of a genuinely open approach, not the end of it.

Sony has taken one step further in its commitment to maintain an open approach by submitting Registered Disclosure Document No.34 (RDD 34) to SMPTE. The Low Latency Video Codec (LLVC) is published and openly available. Sony is also proceeding with the submission of Registered Disclosure Document No.38 (RDD 38) for Network Device Control Protocol. Further, Media Transport Format is also under preparation to submit Registered Disclosure Document.

“Sony has been openly leading the discussion on IP Live Production technologies for more than five years”, said Hiroshi Kiriyama, Senior General Manager, Media Segment Business Division, Sony Corporation. “The proposal of the Networked Media Interface (NMI) is key for interoperability. It ensures Live Production over IP is ready today and transparent for tomorrow by respecting all the aspects recommended by standardization groups for NMI.” Kiriyama continued, “Sony has been and will continue to be committed in leading and ensuring an industry-wide interoperable approach is taken, while working closely with standardization committees, alliance partners and our customers.”

The challenging live environment, which utilizes the NMI, demonstrates that the technology is ready and future proof. The biggest Brazilian commercial broadcaster, TV Globo, has just started using the world’s first purpose-built 4K/IP OB truck, incorporating Sony’s technology that includes the new HDC-4800, to cover upcoming sporting events in Brazil.
