Education in Australasia is in the midst of massive change. New approaches to learning must reflect the demands of the 24x7, always-on world, while also taking advantage of the familiarity most pupils already have with managing, using and exploiting multimedia content. Sony has a clear vision for solutions to transform all aspects of learning, teaching and management.

An environment encouraging enthusiastic participation
Next-generation learning

Sony has a vision for a new type of learning environment that has multimedia content at its heart – along with the means to create, import, distribute, manage, share, archive and protect that content. An environment that employs high-performance AV studios, networked displays and projectors, cameras, monitors, computing, storage and hand-held devices in a single integrated system. And an environment which encourages enthusiastic participation and is enabled by recording and editing suites, specialist software applications, educational software products and other file transfer protocols.

In practice it means that lessons and lectures can be recorded and reviewed offline. Pupils, staff, parents and governors will have 24x7 access to the information they need. Distance learning will be enabled by secure videoconferencing in high definition. Physical security will be constantly monitored. And there will be an increasing use of technologies that are currently the preserve of home entertainment, such as mobile media players, that will bring a fresh dimension to enrich the classroom experience.

The vision ultimately offers institutions a technology and digital content platform that is flexible, continuously re-configurable and cost-effective to own.

Broadly, the Sony strategy brings a wide range of integrated technologies that can be segmented into three categories – Learning, Teaching and Management.

Sony and Learning
Young people's familiarity with modern technology is – in education terms – an untapped resource that can be exploited to the full. In our vision, we see an increasing use of hand-held devices to encourage participation. We see distance learning enabled by videoconferencing. We see lectures that can be recorded and shared between classes, between schools and even between countries.

Sony and Teaching
Teachers need the support of tools and resources to help them engage pupils and deliver the best classroom experience. In out vision, we help teachers to focus their passion and maximise lesson delivery. We enable them to expand their boundaries through creative use of multimedia content. We see compelling lessons being enhanced through the use of a wide range of technologies. And we see flexible ways to connect pupils with external experts and with other institutions to broaden their horizons.

Sony and Management
Institutions need their technology environments to be accessible, reliable, flexible and safe. In our vision, we see an overall systems architecture that provides open access to content with robust policies for sharing information. We see a comprehensive digital signage system that can be used to selectively distribute information throughout the institution. And we see networked security cameras and monitoring that maintains constant vigilance.
